SCHOTT Pharmaceutical Packaging have pioneered a new coating technology for pharmaceutical packaging containers which are used in the lyophilisation process.

These SCHOTT TopLyo® containers are coated internally with a hydrophobic layer which gives improved geometric design and optimum efficiency for the lyophilization drug. The ultra-thin hydrophobic layer is between 40 - 100nm thick and is completely transparent.

Vials that feature these hydrophobic coatings have such homogeneous surfaces that lyophilised substances find it difficult to adhere to the inside walls, which means you produce a clean and consistent lyophilised cake, which results in the easy emptying of residual product volume after reconstitution.

As well as the hydrophobic layer, SCHOTT have optimised the geometry of the vials for enhanced thermal transfer, which also dramatically reduces glass breakage during the freeze drying process.
